We DO NOT ship our cats via “Cargo”!

The Ethical Dilemma of Shipping Kittens via Cargo: Health and Life Risks

In an age where convenience often trumps compassion, the practice of shipping kittens via cargo has raised significant ethical concerns. While the idea of transporting pets from one location to another may seem benign, the reality is starkly different for these vulnerable creatures. This blog explores the ethical implications, health risks, and the alarming neglect couriers exhibit during the transport of kittens.

Ethical Concerns

At the heart of the matter is the ethical question of whether it is right to subject these delicate animals to the stresses of cargo travel. Kittens, like all sentient beings, deserve to be treated with care and respect. The practice of shipping them as mere cargo commodifies their lives, reducing them to objects rather than living beings with needs and feelings.

Health and Life Risks

The health risks associated with shipping kittens via cargo are numerous and severe:

1. Stress and Anxiety: The journey is often traumatic for kittens. The loud noises, strange smells, and constant movement can lead to extreme stress and anxiety. This mental strain can have lasting effects on their overall well-being.

2. Temperature Extremes: Cargo holds are not typically climate-controlled, exposing kittens to harsh temperature variations. Extreme cold or heat can lead to hypothermia or heatstroke, conditions that are often fatal for young, fragile animals.

3. Dehydration and Starvation: Due to the length of some journeys and inadequate provisions, kittens can suffer from dehydration and malnutrition. The lack of proper care during transport exacerbates these conditions, putting their lives at serious risk.

4. Physical Injury: The handling of cargo is far from gentle. Kittens can suffer physical injuries from rough handling, jostling during transport, or being inappropriately confined in small, cramped spaces.

Neglect by Couriers

The negligence of couriers during the transport of kittens is a critical issue. Reports have surfaced of kittens being left unattended for hours, with no access to food or water. Instances of carriers being mishandled, dropped, or left in unsuitable conditions are alarmingly frequent. This neglect not only endangers the health of the kittens but also highlights a profound disregard for their welfare.

Conclusion

The practice of shipping kittens via cargo is fraught with ethical dilemmas and significant health risks. The distress and danger these young animals face during transport are clear indicators that this practice needs urgent reevaluation. The welfare of kittens should never be compromised for the sake of convenience or profit.

As responsible pet owners and compassionate humans, we must advocate for better, more humane methods of transporting animals. Ensuring that kittens are treated with the care and respect they deserve is not just an ethical imperative but a reflection of our commitment to the welfare of all living beings.

Ensuring Ethical and Safe Transportation for Our Kittens

At Bella Maine Coons, we will never allow any of our kittens to be shipped via cargo. The health and safety of our kittens are our top priorities, and we are committed to ensuring they are always treated with the utmost care and respect. For those out-of-state purchasers, we have established clear and ethical arrangements:

  1. Flying to Our Location: Buyers can fly to the nearest airport, which could be in Milwaukee, Madison, or Chicago. We will meet them at the airport with the kitten, ensuring that the kitten travels with the buyer as a passenger and is attended to throughout the entire journey.
  2. Driving to Meet Us: Buyers can either drive to our store in Johnson Creek, WI, or we can meet them halfway. Throughout the trip, the kitten will be attended to the entire time, ensuring their well-being.
  3. Flying Us to Meet Them: Buyers can fly us out to their nearest airport. The kitten will travel with us as a passenger, ensuring they are attended to throughout the journey.
  4. Train or Bus Transport: Taking a train or bus is also an option, provided the kitten travels as a passenger and is attended to throughout the entire journey.

There are no exceptions to these rules. If a buyer requires us to travel, they will need to cover mileage, travel costs, and, if necessary, room and board. If these options are not feasible, we will refuse the sale and recommend that the buyer seek an ethical breeder closer to their location.

Our commitment to the ethical treatment of our kittens remains steadfast, and we will always prioritize their health and safety above all else.

Ensuring Ethical Acquisition and Transport of New Bloodlines

This policy also applies when we acquire a new feline for a new bloodline upon retiring one of our own cats. We personally fly out to the country of purchase (recently, it has often been Canada) to meet the breeder at their residence. This allows us to observe firsthand the living conditions of their cats and assess their qualities and ethics as a breeder. This visit follows months of thorough discussions via messenger.

The kitten(s) travel back with us as passengers and are attended to throughout the entire journey, ensuring their comfort, safety, cleanliness, and access to food and water. We understand that travel can be very stressful for animals, and it is our priority to keep them as calm and relaxed as possible.
